You probably know that the mountains are filled with various recreational activities; boating, fishing, hunting and hiking to name a few.  But maybe you were thinking of a new hobby.

North Carolina has a number of gem and gold mines where people can hunt for rubies, sapphires, garnets, emeralds, aquamarines, gold and more.  For a listing of these mines as well as mineral museums and North Carolina mineral clubs, check the following Web site: /about/divisions/energy-mineral-land-resources/north-carolina-geological-survey/nc-geology.

It is well known that Western Carolina has yielded gold in the rivers for years.  I’m not saying you will find gold, but it is out there.

A friend of ours pans for gold in the Valley River and consistently is successful.  It might only be worth $10 but he has found a chunk large enough for making a necklace.

Throughout the area you will see signs for panning for gems.  These too yield small rubies, quartz and sapphires.

Whether panning for gold or gems, keep in mind the panning is usually conducted in running streams and the mountain water is cold.

Some really big gold finds are being made with metal detectors. A detector will allow you to scan in seconds an amount of material that it would take you an hour to process in a dry washer.

Prospecting in the mountains. Experience the outdoors and find your own gold nuggets in the process. Prospecting is a whole lot of fun - it's an exciting and healthy endeavor for the whole family that everyone can participate in.
