The Cherokee County Courthouse, the seat of Cherokee County, is constructed of unpolished blue marble that was quarried in the adjacent community of Marble, NC. This is the only Courthouse in North Carolina made from the county's native marble.
The current courthouse was erected in 1927 after a fire destroyed the previous brick courthouse in January 1926. In fact, there have been a total of 4 courthouses on this site with the current courthouse being the fifth. The architect for the current courthouse, James J. Baldwin, used a Classical Revival Style design. This design uses an impressive Greek style form and was most often used for courthouses at that time.
The interior contains some of the original woodwork and stone styling. There is a bell on top of the dome and four clocks facing in each directon. Around 2017 the old copper lantern, located atop the dome, was removed and restored.
The Cherokee County Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
